Garden Bloggers’ Bloom Day - March
March 15, 2008 by acornalley
The garden is in full spring mode now - blooms abound, and hints of months to come are everywhere. The Mexican Mint Marigold (tagetes lucida) and its cousin, tagetes lemmonii, are leafing out again; I pulled up a few new chunks of the Brazilian Bog Sage (salvia uliginosa) that just popped up; the ranunculus are leafing out; hollyhocks are getting huge; and so on.
It is a daffodil party in the front garden right now. Here is Butter and Eggs:

Double Campernelle:

One whose name I have forgotten:

Itzim:

Single Campernelle:

Erlicheer:

Narcissus dug from old home site on my company’s property (narcissus jonquilla simplex?):

Some iris (not yet blooming) and another early daffodil that is at all the old home places (done for the year already) were collected at the same time and planted on the hill behind the garage.
Moving on from daffodils, the hyacinths are also blooming. The white ones (Madame Sophie) were first, and you can see in this picture they are fading. Shown here are also Blue Giant and Marconi:

And here are more Marconi and Madame Sophie, with City of Haarlem (pale yellow) and Mulberry Rose, which really look a more mauvy-red than the purple that appears here:

A closeup of Blue Giant. It is a delicious swirl of blues and purples:

Finally for the bulbs are the summer snowflakes (Leucojum aestivum), also dug from the old home site. Despite their common name, they bloom here in spring:

That’s it for the bulbs now blooming. Crocus are done - they didn’t do so well here, which may be because our winter wasn’t all that cold, or may just be the doings of the squirrels. There were a few that popped up here and there, but nothing spectacular.
Also blooming now are rosemary and osmanthus fragrans (blooming since December), forsythia, pansies and violas (both wild and planted), ajuga, weeds galore, carolina jessamine, and one of six tiny quince shrubs I planted last fall. The plant is literally 5 inches tall and wide, and has at least 15 blossoms. Here’s one (note my hand in the picture, turning it toward the camera):

Thanks for stopping by and seeing what my garden has to offer. Head on over to May Dreams and check out what’s blooming in the rest of the world this March GBBD.
I love all those daffodils and am impressed that you know the names of most of mine. I’ve long forgotten the names of the cultivars I have.
Your garden looks like what I hope mine will look like in a few weeks. Beautiful and full of spring!
Thanks for joining us for bloom day!
I meant to say “most of yours”!
Loved the daffodil party with the hyacinths. All are my favorites. A body just can’t have too many of either.
Seeing your daffodils makes me feel I need to add some to my garden. Great mixture. I love the Butter and eggs.
I’m envious of your daffodils. At least I can grow summer snowflakes but, as you know, they aren’t quite as showy.
BTW I tried to visit you blog via your Blotanical listing and got an error. I think you used the address “wordpress.acornalley.com” to register there when your actual address is “acornalley.wordpress.com”.
Thanks, MSS. I will try to get my blotanical listing fixed up.
